The Fisheries Research Institute has conducted red salmon spawning ground surveys in the Kvichak River system since 1947. Until 1955 the surveys were limited to a few major spawning areas, where estimates of abundance and fish samples for determination of age and size composition were obtained. This work was conducted with funds provided by Bristol Bay members of the Alaska salmon industry. Since 1955 the studies have been supported by funds provided through contracts under the Saltonstall-Kennedy bill and administered by the US Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. From 1955 the study's objectives have been to determine (1) spawning distribution throughout the watershed; and (2) differences in age composition of fish in the major spawning areas. Past work is summarized in a Kvichak spawning ground catalog (in manuscript), which includes detailed descriptions of all known spawning areas and estimates of fish abundance for all years through 1962, Koo and smith(1960) presented freshwater age data for the years 1956-1958, and demonstrated the need of sampling for age composition on the trunk strea, and on the spawning grounds.
