The major stocks of salmon in North America have been fished commerically for about one hundred years. In most cases the yield or stock strength today is less than that observed during development and maturation of the fishery. The universality of the decline suggests that this must be related to removal of members of a stock by the fisher. For a long time declines were related to overfishing and insufficient egg deposition. In most recent years it is becoming increasingly clear that the function of the escapement, in addition to providing eggs, also affected the survival in fresh water of progeny in different ways...
