This report summarizes seven research projects carried out under a grant from Canon USA. The purpose of the research grant is to support research that would: 1) Determine atmospheric mercury inputs into the Isle Royale ecosystem and assess the contribution of the park geology for mercury inputs; 2) Determine mercury levels in the island's abiotic and biotic environment by examining sediments, water, plankton, and fish in Sargent Lake; blood, feathers, and egg shell fragments of common loons on Sargent Lake and other inland lakes; deer mice within and outside the Sargent Lake watershed; and moose molars on Isle Royale and human baby teeth from the Upper Peninsula; 3) Compile all the information into an integrated analysis of mercury presence and impacts to the Isle Royale ecosystem; 4) Broadly disseminate information and results of the project to park visitors, major media, the research community, volunteers, and agencies and stakeholders involved in the Lake Superior Binational Program. This report compiles and summarizes all seven research projects into one document so that the information becomes more easily accessible to park managers and interpreters.
