Personal Observations of Okala Islet, Molokai, Hawaii Including a Regional Checklist of Vascular Plants June 2002
Wood KR and LeGrande M. 2002. Personal Observations of Okala Islet, Molokai, Hawaii Including a Regional Checklist of Vascular Plants June 2002
On 7 June 2002, the authors visited Okala, an off-shore islet under the jurisdiction of Kalaupapa National Historical Park. In this paper Okala's plant ecology is described and a preliminary checklist of vascular plants is presented, in addition to data on two rare Hawaiian plant taxa (i.e., Pittosporum halophilum and Scaevola coriacea). This work is part of an ongoing biotic assesment of Hawaii's off-shore islets which is being supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Sevice; National Park Service; National Tropical Botanical Garden; The Weathertop Foundation; The Nature Conservancy; The Seacology Foundation; along with several biologists/specialists in the scientific community.
