Craters of the Moon National Monument Mule Deer Survey 1996-1998

Munts M. 1999. Craters of the Moon National Monument Mule Deer Survey 1996-1998. Craters of The Moon National Monument

Results of spring and fall deer census 1996-1998 with summaries of past (1984-1998) census. Mule deer surveys have been conducted annually since 1984. This report summarizes surveys during the spring and fall of 1996-98. The number of does and yearlings observed in the spring counts continued a period of slow decline in 1996 and 1997 before reaching a record high in 1998. However, the fall survey numbers and total population estimates continued to decline each year. This suggests that deer may be spreading out and a wider survey area may be necessary to obtain an accurate population estimate in the future.
