Floristic survey at Hovenweep National Monument 2001-2003

This is a final report of a three-year floristic survey of Hovenweep National Monument, by NPS Biologist Charlie Schelz. Researchers examined previous reports of botanical investigations and all specimens in the Hovenweep herbarium prior to initial field work. They mapped locations of collections to determine where most previous botanical work was performed. They conducted field surveys of each of the six detached units that make up the monument, with efforts most concentrated in areas not represented in the herbarium collections. Researchers used aerial photographs to guide their route, recorded each species encountered, collected at least one specimen of most species not already represented in the Hovenweep herbarium, and mapped vegetation types/associations. The report presents plant lists of each unit and of Hovenweep overall, as well as vegetation types in each unit and in Hovenweep overall. Each year, researchers performed surveys four times each, in early spring, late spring, summer and fall. Schelz and SEUG collections curator Vicki Webster are processing plant specimens to be stored in the Hovenweep herbarium, which is stored at the Southeast Utah Group Headquarters, in Moab, Utah. Webster entered specimen data into the database ANCS+.
