A brief description of the developmental plan of a monitoring program for the National Park of American Samoa with the focus to evaluate the health of the ecosystem and implement management actions when warranted. A vital signs workshop convened in 2001 with the purpose to view coral reef monitoring from a small-park perspective, where local resources are fewer than in more developed states or countries with numerous management agencies and academic institutions.
