A study the Pioneer Mountain Ranch to assess effects of sheep and cattle grazing on Lewis’s Woodpecker nest survival, riparian breeding bird densities, and vegetation in aspen riparian woodlands. Our objectives were to collect info on Lewis’s Woodpecker reproductive success and productivity; estimate breeding bird densities in aspen riparian woodlands and compare bird species composition and densities in sheep and cattle-grazed habitats; determine which variables directly influence Woodpecker nest survival; determine habitat availability for breeding birds; determine aspen stand dynamics. Riparian woodlands support a higher density of breeding birds than any other habitat in the West. In south-central Idaho, the predominant deciduous tree in riparian areas is aspen. However, heavy grazing by both livestock and wild ungulates and fire suppression are contibuting to the decline of aspen woodlands. In May 2002 a study was initiated to assess the effects of sheep and cattle grazing on populations and habitats of birds in aspen riparian woodlands. This study is being supported by a wide variety of federal agencies (including Craters of the Moon NM), Montana State University, and private landholders.
