1999 herd unit classification of Roosevelt elk in Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP)

Falvey B. 1999. 1999 herd unit classification of Roosevelt elk in Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP). Redwood National and State Parks. Orick, CA

The 1999 annual report for the monitoring of Roosevelt elk herds in Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP). Excerpts: "Annual classification data of Roosevelt elk in RNSP are important to document relative abundance and simple population characteristics. During 1999, classification counts were conducted opportunistically by Fish and Wildlife Branch staff while performing other field surveys. Additionally, field visits to herd areas were made solely for classification counts. Classification counts are performed to determine the ratios of calves/cows and bulls/cows." Seven herds were observed in RNSP during 1999. Tables display the elk counts by herd location with the calf/cow ratio. The numbers of elk are grouped into classes of mature bulls, spikes, cows, and calves. Each table is followed by a brief discussion about the herd. Includes harvest data from elk hunts adjacent to RNSP and recommendations for future counts.
