This study attempted to describe the distribution and numbers of the Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapillus) in Oklahoma, and Texas and adjacent Mexico. The census revealed that the species is disappearing in a random pattern throughout the Texas hill country. The Black-capped Vireos are decreasing in population because of nest parasitization by the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater), growth of bushy vegetation into trees, encroachment of junipers, and removal of bush foliage by goats and sheep
