This publication is an introduction to some of the most important laws related to natural and cultural resources management by the National Park Service. Each account in this document discusses the main provisions of the law, some historic background, and relationships to National Park Service responsibilities, and lists references for further information. Familiarity with the laws affecting management of the National Park System is necessary both to carry out the requirements of the laws and to use them as tools in protecting parks. This publication is an introduction to some of the most important laws related to natural and cultural resources management by the National Park Service. Further knowledge can be gained by the listed references. The laws were selected for their breadth or depth of impact on National Park Service activities. The selection was necessarily arbitrary, for the list of laws related to National Park Service resources management is long. The following accounts vary in degree of detail depending largely on the complexity of the law. Each account in this document discusses the main provisions of the law, some historic background, and relationships to National Park Service responsibilities, and lists references for further information. Legislation includes: Yellowstone National Park Act; National Park Service Organic Act; General Authorities Act of 1970; Redwood National Park Act; Antiquities Act of 1906; Historic Sites, Buildings and Antiquities Act; Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979; Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965; National Environmental Policy Act of 1969; Clean Air Act; Clean Water Act; Endangered Species Act of 1973; Wilderness Act of 1964; Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act as amended; and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980.
