Great Basin calcite vein and the Pleistocene time scale

Johnson RG and Wright HE. 1989. Great Basin calcite vein and the Pleistocene time scale. Science. 246(4927):262

A letter from the first two authors concerns a 1988 article regarding implications of analysis of vein calcite. The letter suggests alternative explanations for conclusions based on oxygen-18 evidence from Devils Hole (Death Valley National Park) that calcite dates for the last interglacial stage are 7000-17,000 years earlier than dates derived from the Antarctic and marine records. The response by two of the 1988 authors refutes the alternative suggestions. A note at the end states that Winograd et al. have extended the time series and "replicated the published age for termination II" since publishing the 1988 paper.
