The behavior patterns of 2 captive bats, young and mother, at Big Bend National Park, Texas, are discussed. The baby bat seemed to nurse constantly for the first 48 hours. The mother was gentle and attentive; returning to the cage with her baby, she first smelled him, and then licked his face, ears, wings and back. She often flew with the young attached to her teat. The baby was never dropped. Four days after birth the baby died, probably from inadequate nourishment. Since birth it had grown in total length, 2 mm; tail, 1 mm; hind foot, 0 mm; ear, 5 mm; tragus, 1 mm; and forearm, 0 mm. At birth it had weighed 4g; at death, 2.5g. Live spotted bats had a bare throat patch exposed only when the head was brought upward and backward.
