A rodent population of five sympatrical species living under natural conditions in the Chihuahuan desert was studied at a dry season (June 1977). The three species of nocturnal granivorious Heteromyidae (Dipodomys nelsoni, Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus penicillatus) show a lower water-turnover rate (7.8 to 11.7 ml/100 g/d) than this of Neotoma albigula another nocturnal species which eats succulent plants (13.8 ml/100 g/d). However, the highest values were observed in the diurnal ground squirrel Spermophilus spilosoma which has a mixed granivorous and insectivorous diet (20.3 to 27.2 ml/100g/d). The water- turnover is not simply correlated with the body size of the animals.
