Shrubs--A neglected resource of arid lands

McKell CM. 1975. Shrubs--A neglected resource of arid lands. Science. 187(4179):803-809

Shrubs are underutilized or misutilized in arid regions due to a variety of factors including: traditions, lack of suitable technology, ignorance, economic limitations, and a desire to preserve existing environments. The worth of any shrub can only be determined by assessing its relation to the major ecosystem and the extent to which it is relied upon by user groups.
