The purpose of this report is to document visitor use and human bear interactions at Moraine Creek and Funnel Creek. Biological Science Technician Kelly Proffitt and SCA volunteer Alex Chase camped at Crosswinds Lake and observed activity from 6 to 15 August 2000. Moraine Creek is one of several areas in Katmai National Park and Preserve that is experiencing increasing visitor use and does not have regularly scheduled NPS presence. During late July and August, Moraine and Funnel Creeks support a substantial spawning population of sockeye salmon, attracting a concentration of brown bears. The relatively high number of bears and visitors frequenting the area results in frequent human-bear interactions. An evaluation of the type and location of human-bear interactions along Moraine and Funnel Creeks may be useful for planning future management of the area.
