Small mammal trapping continued for the second year in conjunction with a seabird monitoring project at Puale Bay (Becharof National Wildlife Refuge). A trapping grid of one hundred Sherman live traps was used to conduct the study. Trapping effort was modifies from past efforts because of disturbance to the grid be Arctic ground squirrel. Species captured included northern red-backed vole, meadow jumping mouse, masked shrew, and unidentified shrews. Northern red-backed voles were the most abundant species captured, followed by meadow jumping mouse. Total captures for all species during each month decreased in 2002 from 2001 with the exception of meadow jumping mouse in July and August. Morphological measurments, sex, and the preference of ectoparasites were noted. Animals were individually marked by fur clipping and applying fur dye. Population estimates cannot yet be determined for species captured at Puale Bay because of the low capture rate.
