This study was a first attempt to systematically record the physical conditions of campsites and potential ecological impacts from human use along Glacier Bay's shoreline. Results of this study will be used to inform the upcoming Backcountry Management Plan. We modified a standard campsite impact measurement protocol to fit Glacier Bay's unique geologic and biologic conditions. We identified 257 shoreline campsites in 134 survey areas. Seventy-four percent of all campsites contained rock rings, 22% trash 16% trailing, and 9% supratidal firepits. Fourteen percent of all campsites showed no human impacts, 59% were rated as low impacts, 23% medium, and 4% high. Potential ecological impacts were observed in 134 (100%) of the survey areas. We recommend further monitoring of campsites and initiation of studies evaluating ecological impacts of human use on species of management concern.
