A unique hypermaritime climate bathes southeast Alaska in cool and humid weather with unrelenting precipitation. As such, ecological patterns and processes are largely tied to how water is cycled over the land. By focusing on those factors that control water processes, that is physiography and lithology, an intuitive and robust way of distinguishing terrestrial ecosystems. By using physiography and lithology criteria, a total of 85 subsections were delineated and described for southeast Alaska and adjoining areas of Canada.
