During summer of 2003, personnel from the USGS Alaska Science Center conducted surveys for nesting birds on beaches throughout Glacier Bay. The purpose of these surveys was to identify important areas for nesting birds. This is the first phase of a study to determine possible effects of human disturbance on beach-nesting birds. At the request of Mary Kralovec (Glacier Bay National Park, Resource Management), we have compiled this summary on our findings in selected areas of Glacier Bay that are currently closed to protect wildlife, or may warrant consideration for closure in the future. These are preliminary findings, and we consider only a few selected areas of the Park. We are not making any recommendations for wildlife management at this time. A full report on our findings and recommendations will be submitted to Glacier Bay National Park in coming months.
