The tadpoles of Couch's spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus couchii) carry out conspecific egg predation (cannibalize conspecific eggs). Conspecific tadpoles concentrate around newly laid eggs, and in such areas, survival rates of conspecific eggs were decreased. When more distantly related individuals are available, tadpoles will consume them, rather than the conspecific tadpoles. Cannibalistic oophagy can benefit individuals by eliminating potential resource competitors, increasing resources available for survivors, and providing energy-rich nutrients. Cannibalistic tadpoles may reach metamorphosis earlier and at learger sizes, reducing the risk of desiccation as pools dry up.
