The border region between Coahuila and Chihuahua that adjoins Big Bend National Park includes the Ejidos of Benito Juarez, San Vicente, Ojo Caliente, Nueva Esperanza, Norias de Boquillas and a little further to the south, Jaboncillos. Except for Ojo Caliente and Nueva esperajza, they all have small villages. Of these, only Benito Juarez has water and electricity distribution systems. The primary activity in the area is livestock raising. There has been a long history of natural resource abuse including the explotation of minerals, harvesting of lechuguilla and candelilla, and range abuse due to poor livestock management practices. These have deteriorated the renewable natural resources. There are also problem and conflicts of a political and social nature, for example disputes over property lines. The trepass of livestock into the National Park is another important problem. this is causing innumerable difficulties that, if allowed to continue, will endanger the relationship between the Park and the ejidatarios. This not only causes a conflict between neighbors but also represents an international problem. It ultimately translates into many different detriments including a deterrent to tourism. This, in turn, decrreases the possibilities for development of the area.
