An accurate, quantitative description of a plant community is difficult to obtain because of the inherent variability in juxtaposition of the plant population. We have been estimating plant density, cover, and frequency of occurrence as they relate to food and habitat of moose on the Kenai National Moose Range, Alaska. For shrubs and saplings over 40 cm in height we have used 1 x 5-m quadrats to estimate density and frequency of occurrence. Because of the conflicting results of studies evaluating density-estimation methods, we felt it was necessary to determine how well the density as estimated by 1 x 5-m quadrats compared with other methods.
