Energy Expenditure in Moose Calves

We estimated resting heat production in an open circuit respiration chamber for 10 moose (Alces alces) calves during summer and late winter. Heat production measurements did not differ (P=0.3097) between sexes, but summer measurements (172 kcal/kgBW 0.75/day) were significantly higher (P=0.0001) than those from late winter (117 kcal/kgBW 0.75/day). Resting heat production estimates for calves were higher than those reported for adult moose.
