Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, established a formal breeding bird survey in 1994. The program objectives are to determine the size and composition of passerine communities on Isle Royale, as well as to monitor and compare populations over time. Point counts were conducted from June 17 to June 30, 2004, using eight park trails as transects. 126 of 130 points were surveyed. Species diversity values were calculated for each transect; values ranged from 0.88 to 0.95, with a 9-year island-wide average of 0.92. A total of 56 species and 1090 individuals were recorded. The majority of individuals are neotropical migrants, comprising an average of 49% of the annual breeding songbirds on Isle Royale. Continental migrants account for an average of 37%, and resident species account for an average of 14% from 1996-2004.
