Status of muskrats in Northwestern California

At of the time of printing muskrats have not successfully established themselves in Northwestern California. However, they have inhabited Lake Earl in Del Norte County for several years. In this and other areas, they are seen occasionally. A muskrat farm was established near Smith River in 1931. A release of muskrats was made in 1937 at Prairie Creek State Park. Two muskrats were caught in Redwood Creek in 1941. A muskrat was also observed at over 6,000 feet, along Annie Creek at Crater Lake National Park.
