Kilauea Volcano: The 1967-68 summit eruption
Kinoshita WT, Koyanagi RY, Wright TL, Fiske RS. 1969. Kilauea Volcano: The 1967-68 summit eruption. Science. 166(3904):459-468
The eruption in the summit pit crater, Halemaumau, of the Kilauea volcano that began Nov 5, 1967, is described. Included are descriptions of the phases of the eruptions and alternating periods of quiescence: 31 phases between Nov 1967 and July 1968 are discussed. Measurements of summit deformation and ground crackingare shown, as are chemical composition and temperature of the lava. A program of monitoring horizontal strain is suggested as an approach toward predicting erutptions.
