Environmental Assessment report for "Save Historic Structures and Cultural Landscapes" (Project MIMA-170AB) at Minute Man National Historical Park. This Environmental Assessment (EA) report for Minute Man National Historical Park (NHP) presents the results of planning activities undertaken to determine the potential impact that rehabilitation projects at the Battle Road Unit would have upon cultural features, natural features, and socioeconomics. Several important events, areas, and structures along the Battle Road Unit played a significant role in the outbreak of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775. The road was beset by a series of skirmishes between colonial militia and the British troops in what became known as the Running Battle, advancing east from Concord to Lexington, Massachusetts. Five of the seven structures in question existed during the time of the conflict, and the Bloody Angle served as a pivotal landscape feature as the Minute Men attacked the retreating British. The aim of the EA report and project is to rehabilitate portions of the historic Battle Road landscape for purposes of preservation and interpretation, helping visitors to understand the particular site and its association to events in American history. The proposed action is the rehabilitation of seven historic structures and their associated landscapes, plus the rehabilitation of the Bloody Angle landscape in the Battle Road Unit. The purpose is to rehabilitate the associated landscape to conditions similar to those experienced by the participants of the Running Battle of 1775 and to ensure the preservation of significant historical and cultural resources. To accomplish these goals, the park’s General Management Plan calls for historic structures rehabilitation, restoration, and a maintenance program, alongside the development of a landscape management plan that will establish priorities for action and expand understanding of the area’s importance. At the time this report was written, the Minute Man Park was also constructing a Safe Visitor Access Trail to connect the interpretive sites of the Battle Road Unit, allowing for a safer and more cohesive visitor experience.
