A three year study of 546 small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) marked and released in a 30-square mile coastal belt, confirms earlier fragmentary knowledge that this species is highly sedentary. Average moves between successive captures are about 0.25 ,mile for males and about 0.10 mile for females. Range seldom exceeded 1.0 mile; those of females seldom exceeded 0.4 mile. Moves as longs as 2-5 miles are only rarely detected. These patterns of movement, notably restricted even for a small carnivore, appear to be correlated with an abundance of adequate shelter and highly omnivorous diet, and suggest a complex social structure that permits extensive overlap of individual ranges.
