Westward movement of ground water from the Long Meadow area to the General Sherman Tree area in Sequoia National Park is prevented by an eastward hydraulic gradient and low fracture permeability of a granodiorite ridge separating the two areas. Clay beds present in the alluvium near Long Meadow would hinder, but not preclude, recharge to the ground water systems beneath Long Meadow from streams. A dependable ground-water supply of about 50 gallons per minute could be developed from the Meadow area, and would not affect ground or surface water in the Sherman Tree area.
