Effect of Elevation on Distribution of Female Bats in the Black Hills, South Dakota

Cryan PM, Bogan MA, Altenbach S. 2000. Effect of Elevation on Distribution of Female Bats in the Black Hills, South Dakota. Journal of Mammalogy. 81(3):719-725

Bats (7 species) were mist netted in 1995, 1996 and 1997 in the Black Hills of North Dakota (encompassing Jewel Cave National Monument) at elevations of 1000-1910m. Seventy-five percent of captures were males. A significant inverse relationship between elevation and relative abundance of reproductive females was found. The authors suggest that high-elevational habitats impose thermoregulatory costs and decrease foraging efficiency.
