Under an appointment as scientist in kelp investigation in the United States Bureau of Soils the writer visited the coast of southwestern Alaska in the summer of 1913. During June and July the coast of much of the region affected by the eruption of Katmai volcano in June, 1912, was visited. The events attending this eruption have been described by Perry; the effects of the eruption as seen in June and July, 1912, by Martin; the composition of the ash that fell at Kodiak by Fry; and the effects of the eruption on land vegetation by Griggs.
