Duck Banding in Arctic Alaska

In the first 2 weeks of August, 1962, a small crew built a duck trap on Ohtig Lake, 40 miles east of Fort Yukon on the Arctic Circle, made one drive, and banded 5,050 ducks (10,000 flightless birds captured). This project, requiring 488 man-hours, was the culmination of 3 years' experimentation during which 22,297 ducks were banded. Small aircraft were used for transportation, and much of the equipment was designed specifically for an airborne, brush-type operation. Including only recoveries from previous years and newly banded ducks, 11.5 birds were handled per man-hour (10.4 new ducks), primarily lesser scaups (Aythya affinis) and other divers.
