The mineral composition of browse plants for moose (Alces alces) was studied in the Cook Inlet-Sustina region and on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The level of macro- and micronutrients, an indicator of food quality, is highest in summer when leaves of browse plants, herbaceous plants, and grasses are available food sources and lowest in winter when food is limited primarily to twigs. These differences, due to seasonable availability of parts and kinds of plants, were larger than were the differences due to plants growing in different kinds of soils.
