The age of self-sufficiency of brown/grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in Alaska is of interest to game managers because of its management implications and because it is an unknown in the life history of brown/grizzly bears. For many years in Alaska, female brown/grizzly bears accompanied by cubs have received complete protection from hunting. The intent of this regulation is to protect cubs from being orphaned by hunter harvest of the sow. This protection theoretically enhances survival of cubs, but is also partially based on aesthetic considerations.
