At College, Alaska (64° 52' N. Lat., 147° 49' W. Long.), Rana sylvatica usually commences breeding activities during the last week of April or the first week of May (extremes from 1952 through 1963 ranged from 24 April to 18 May). Phenologically, these frogs breed as early as seems possible for a terrestrial poikilothermic vertebrate, and annual variations in breeding dates appear largely due to variations in the spring thaw conditions which, in turn, are related to environmental temperatures and to persistence of snow cover.
