1987 Noatak Biosphere Reserve: Raptor Survey

At least two pairs of threatened arctic peregrine falcons (F.o. tundrius) nested successfully on the Noatak River in 1987; similarly, two nesting pairs of peregrine falcons were also recorded in 1986 but at different locations. Seven young gyrfalcons were also banded at two different eyries. Identifying and preserving raptor habitat within the Noatak National Preserve and International Biosphere Reserve is vital for the long-term National Park Service management of unique arctic resources. More data is needed as we record the natural recolonization of the peregrine falcon in historic habitat located within the Noatak River drainage.
