The purpose of this study is to provide a preliminary rapid assessment of the extent and health of the mangrove forest in eight villages on the islands of Tutuila and Aunu'u, American Samoa. The study was conducted between September 25, 2003 and January 3, 2003. Ten mangrove forests were surveyed and 3 of the 10 were severely impacted; however three were in good health and four were in good health but threatened. Mangroves in American Samoa are protected by the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.
