The King Salmon River is a glacially turbid stream with several clear water tributaries that support rainbow trout. During the late 1980's, sport fishing effort appeared to increase on Gertrude Creek, one of the more easily accessible tributaries in the drainage. To monitor stock status of rainbow trout, Gertrude Creek and four other tributaries of the upper river were sampled using hook and line during May-September 1990-1991 and May-June 1992.
