The review covers the status of benthic coral reef habitats and communities in the Pacific region. The 25 islands mentioned in this report are American Samoa, Cocos, Cooks, Easter, Sala y Gomez, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Galapagos, Hawaii, Kermadecs, Kiribati, Marshalls, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Pitcairn, Solomons, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, U.S. Lines and Wake, Vanuatu, Wallis, Futuna, and Western Samoa. Covers a huge area of the Pacific including Hawaii, Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia; covers 2500 major island complexes; reef assessments have been concentrated in urban centers (ie: Hawaii, Pago Pago, etc); major stresses to the reefs are from urbanizations (sewage, dredging, filling, sediments, non-point pollutants, overfishing, construction, etc) and other stresses including dynamite fishing, ship groundings, and oil spills; there is illegal poaching of rare species and military weapons testing; also subject to natural stresses such as cyclones, coral bleaching, COT's, and ciguatera poisoning; breaks down by island
