Developing New Strategies to Manage Mouflon (Ovis musimon) in Hawaii

Tunison T. Developing New Strategies to Manage Mouflon (Ovis musimon) in Hawaii

HAVO has recently acquires the Kahuku Ranch. Although this parcel has outstanding natural resources including many threatened and endangered plants and birds, a large and increasing popn of Mouflon sheep are destroying sensitive Hawaiian plants and degrading forest bird habitats. Resource managers have been successful in controlling feral herbivores throughout Hawaiian National Parks by understanding their social behaior, but new strategies are needed to control this wild species. The overall objective of this research is to develop more efficient control and population monitoring methods for Mouflon.
