The Limnology of lakes in remote, mountainous regions of the world is important because water quality and biotic assemblages may be quickly and drastically changed by very minimal human disturbances. Airborne pollutants and the introduction of fish are often of particular concern in these landscapes that are otherwise protected from human development. Biotic communities were examined in a suite of high and lower elevation lakes in one of America's premiere western national parks. The lakes selected for study were thought to be among the most pristine in western North America and they reprcsentcd tlie full range of elevations and geologic conditions in GLAC. The geology is Precambrian and the waters of this important, high mountain landscape were expected to be remarkably devoid of solutes and organic matter and characterized by rather unique biota. The geologic and elevation gradients probably had the greatest natural influence on biotic assemblages and the introduction of fish in the alpine lakes has likely produced the most measurable effects in relation to other potential pollutants.
