On January 25, 2002, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serviced proposed to remove two previously classified endangered/threatened birds from this list to the extinct list. The Mariana mallard (Anas platyrychos oustaleti), endemic to Guam, Tinian and Saipan has not been seen since 1979. Its decline has been attributed to hunting and habitat loss. There have been no confirmed sightings of the Guam broadbill (Myiagra freycineti), a native to Guam, since 1984. It was presumed extinct by 1985, primarily due to the introduction of the brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis).
