Four (two control and two treatment) vegetation monitoring plots were established in Grand Portage National Monument in 1986. Data were collected on overstory trees (> 6 cm DBH) and understory woody growth (>1.25 cm - < 6 cm DBH) from nine 10-m sq quadrats in each plot in 1986, 1992, 1999 and 2004. Percent herbaceous cover was estimated on nested 1-m quadrats. Overstory tree abundance and basal area were analyzed with Sorenson's dissimilary coefficient and Curtis-Bray ordination to determine how dissimilar plots were at the outset of the study and during subsequent sampling periods. Relative dominance of overstory tree was examined with a Chi-square contingency table. Changes in overstory tree mortality and understory species numbers were examined with two-way ANOVA. Insufficient data on herbaceous cover was collected for meaningful statistical analysis.
