Of the thousands of islands in the world's oceans, those in the central and south Pacific have captured the fancy of adventurers and dreamers for centuries. These islands provide biologists with many fine examples of divergent evolution. The Hawaiian Islands, however, are the jewel in the crown that makes adaptive radiation on the other islands pale in comparison. Hawaiian birds, especially the honeycreepers with their bright colors and exceptionally diverse bills, provide an evolutionary showcase for the world's ornithologists.
