Dewey S and Andersen K. 2005. An inventory of invasive non-native plants in Zion National Park (2003-2004) - final report. Weed Science Research Project Report No. SD0521A. Utah State University; Plants, Soils, and Biometeorology Department. Logan, UT
An inventory of invasive non-native plants was conducted by Utah State University during 2003 and 2004 in portions of Zion National Park. This is the final report for the two-year project. The objectives of this project were to document distirbution and abundance of targeted invasive non-native plant species in anticipation of developing effective vegetation control strategies; to identify significant sources of weed introductions and vectors involved in weed spread; and to test and refine data collection and field inventory collection techniques for future inventory use. A target list of 28 species was identified. Representative photos of species and habitats are included in the report, along with maps of areas inventoried and weed locations. Of the 8,343 acres surveyed in the park, a total of 97.6 acres were infested, an amount equal to 1.2 percent of the land inventoried. Of the 28 targeted species, crews found Carduus nutans, Cirsium vulgare, Convolvulus arvensis, Elaeagnus angustifolia, Onopordum acanthium, Salsola kali, Sorghum halepense, Tamarix ramosissima, and Verbascum thapsus. The balance of the targeted species were not located within the areas surveyed.
