On the Relation Between Species and Area

Gleason critiques Arrhenius' equation which yields that species counts and diversity increase with area. Arrhenius had not previously stated whether his quadrats of study were contiguous or scattered; Gleason proposes that the difference between the two impact the resulting species counts based on area. The author tests this hypothesis by counting plant species in various-sized quadrats in northern Michigan. He notes that certain mathmatical expressions yield results closer to the actual counts but that this may not be true of plant compositions in other ecosystems.
