The distribution of amphibians and reptiles in ND has not been well documented. Previous studies by Wheeler and Wheeler (1966), Hibbard (1972) and Seabloom et al. (1978) showed that the herpetofauna of ND is depauperate compared to other areas. Certain species, nevertheless, are associated with specific habitats and form a distinct part of the prairie fauna (Ballinger et al. 1980). Little remains of the native biotic communities of the northern Great Plains and records of the native fauna of these biotic communities will aid in making sound management decisions in the future. The purpose of this study was to document the distribution of herpetiles in relatively undisturbed stands representing habitat types of THRO and to describe some of the general aspects of their ecology.
