Spore-forming bacteria in the Bacillus subtilis species complex are opportunistic pathogens of vertebrates, insects and plants. Some Bacillus species can invade the hemocoel and kill larval Diptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. Primary pathogenic bacteria, however, are unknown in the Simuliidae. Larval Simuliidae were collected from submerged vegetation in Juney Whank Branch, Swain County in 2001 to screen for pathogens.
