The waters of Pinnacles National Monument were surveyed for riparian aquatic vertebrate and invertebrate species from 2001 through 2004. Vertebrate surveys consisted of walking all stretches of appreciable streams and recording observations. A total of 9 aquatic vertebrate species were encountered consisting of 2 fish, 4 amphibians, and 3 reptiles. Invertebrates were sampled using the California Rapid Bioassessment Protocol, kick nets, dip nets, aerial sweep nets, and black light traps. A total of 249 aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa were collected and identified. This inventory brought the number of dragonflies and damselflies known to occur iin San Benito County from 30 up to 40 species. At least one aquatic macroinvertebrate species new to science was discovered, and several goups were found to be unusually diverse and abundant.
